The Neurodiversity Potential study group (NeuPoteKen) explores research, design, and practice that brings together the strengths-based paradigm of neurodiversity with learner-centered approaches that align with the connected learning paradigm. Its purpose is to build an interdisciplinary and collaborative network of researchers, educators, and designers across Japanese and English-speaking contexts. It integrates the unique strengths of Japanese and overseas scholarship to research and design programs and policies for neurodiverse learners. Project-based learning, in schools, museums, and libraries as well as online environments such as Minecraft or Scratch are examples of connected learning approaches that can serve neurodiverse learners. North American and European contexts have been at the forefront of advancing the neurodiversity paradigm and related advocacy, research, and policies. Japan’s artisanal, game, and otaku cultures and communities offer rich opportunities and platforms for neurodiversity inclusion. Japanese educators have been developing innovative programs for neurodiverse learners that center on making, anime, and technology interests such as trains, games, and coding. Ultimately, the hope is to contribute to the spread of neurodiversity and connected learning approaches in Japan and abroad.
